California's AI cameras have watched for wildfire smoke for years. Microsoft has committed five million dollars.

ALERTCalifornia at UC San Diego runs nearly one thousand three hundred cameras across fire prone land. Its AI scans live feeds for early smoke.

It processes over seven million images daily, and can spot a fire as early as two and a half hours before the first emergency call.

The AI filters out clouds, fog, and shifting light. Crews see a live camera feed before they arrive. AI does not fight fires, firefighters do.

Microsoft has committed five million dollars, two million for in kind technology development and a three million dollar Azure grant, for ALERTCalifornia's next phase.
