Google Adds Voice Control to Gemini on macOS
Google has added a new voice capability to the Gemini app for macOS. Long-press the Fn key and you can speak into any window on your desktop, not just into a chatbot window. By default this gives you intelligent dictation: Gemini transcribes what you said into clean, polished text, automatically removing the "ums" and "ahs", catching mid-sentence corrections, and dropping the formatted text instantly at your cursor. There is a second level that is off by default. If you want Gemini to do more than transcribe, you can opt into Gemini reasoning through your settings, and once you enable it Gemini can understand the context on your screen to help you execute more complex tasks. Google's examples: highlight local files, images, or documents and say something like "Read these vet files and summarize my dog's medical history in an email to the kennel"; highlight text anywhere on screen and use your voice to rewrite it or tweak the tone, such as "Turn these notes into an executive summary with a TL;DR at the top"; or generate and edit images by voice, for example "Take this illustration and generate a dark-mode version of it". Worth being clear about what this is and is not. The Gemini app for macOS already existed, so what is new here is the voice layer inside it, and the screen-reading level is something you turn on yourself rather than something switched on for you. The announcement gives no benchmarks, no accuracy or latency numbers, no pricing, and it does not say whether audio is handled on device or in the cloud. The voice capability is rolling out globally to all users of the Gemini app for macOS in English, with more languages coming soon.
