Google Replaces Gems With Skills in Gemini
Google is rolling out skills directly into Gemini chat globally. A skill lets you save your most-used instructions once and run them again instead of retyping the same prompt, and Google is bringing the functionality to Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit and education customers in the coming weeks. Skills were already available in Gemini Spark.
Transcript
Google is replacing Gems in the Gemini app. Skills now do the repetitive work.
Skills save your most used instructions once so you can run them endlessly. Google is rolling them into Gemini chat globally.
You run one by typing a forward slash and the skill's name. One skill can return three to five distinct viewpoints.
Gems are going away, and Google says they migrate into skills automatically. Opal, its mini apps experiment, shuts down and does not migrate.
Google publishes no time savings data and no benchmark. Every benefit claim is Google's own description, and a footnote limits that global rollout to subscription tiers and adults.

Every claim in this video comes from the top ranking coverage of this topic. The claims and where each one came from:

- "With skills, you can save your most-used instructions once and run them endlessly" Backs scene one, first sentence, that skills save your most used instructions once so you can run them endlessly.(Google, blog.google, "Let skills in Gemini tackle your most repetitive tasks" by Deven Tokuno, Senior Product Manager, Gemini App, dated September 30 2026; the alert-time snapshot captured 2026-09-30T16:02:51.834Z was used as the primary source text.)
- "Today, we're rolling out skills directly into Gemini chat globally" Backs scene one, second sentence, that Google is rolling skills into Gemini chat globally.(Google, blog.google, "Let skills in Gemini tackle your most repetitive tasks" by Deven Tokuno, Senior Product Manager, Gemini App, dated September 30 2026; the alert-time snapshot captured 2026-09-30T16:02:51.834Z was used as the primary source text.)
- "Once you create a skill, you can easily use it again just by typing a forward slash '/' and the skill's name directly in the prompt bar." Backs scene two, first sentence, on running a saved skill with a forward slash and its name.(Google, blog.google, "Let skills in Gemini tackle your most repetitive tasks" by Deven Tokuno, Senior Product Manager, Gemini App, dated September 30 2026; the alert-time snapshot captured 2026-09-30T16:02:51.834Z was used as the primary source text.)
- "Ask Gemini to always provide three to five distinct viewpoints on a topic to help you brainstorm ideas, refine arguments, or commit to a decision." Backs scene two, second sentence, the single worked example of a skill returning three to five distinct viewpoints.(Google, blog.google, "Let skills in Gemini tackle your most repetitive tasks" by Deven Tokuno, Senior Product Manager, Gemini App, dated September 30 2026; the alert-time snapshot captured 2026-09-30T16:02:51.834Z was used as the primary source text.)
- "To make this transition seamless, we will automatically migrate your Gems into skills when Gems go away." Backs scene three, first sentence, that Gems are going away and Google says they migrate into skills automatically.(Google, blog.google, "Let skills in Gemini tackle your most repetitive tasks" by Deven Tokuno, Senior Product Manager, Gemini App, dated September 30 2026; the alert-time snapshot captured 2026-09-30T16:02:51.834Z was used as the primary source text.)
- "Opal, our experiment for building mini apps will also turn down at the same time in November" and the footnote "Gems by Google Labs will also turn down, though these will not migrate into skills." Backs scene three, second sentence, that Opal shuts down and does not migrate.(Google, blog.google, "Let skills in Gemini tackle your most repetitive tasks" by Deven Tokuno, Senior Product Manager, Gemini App, dated September 30 2026; the alert-time snapshot captured 2026-09-30T16:02:51.834Z was used as the primary source text.)
- "With skills, you can save your most-used instructions once and run them endlessly, so you can skip the repetitive prompting and jump straight to the results." This is the strongest efficiency statement in the announcement and it carries no measured time saving, no benchmark and no data of any kind, which backs scene four, first sentence, and the point that every benefit claim is Google's own product description on Google's own blog.(Google, blog.google, "Let skills in Gemini tackle your most repetitive tasks" by Deven Tokuno, Senior Product Manager, Gemini App, dated September 30 2026; the alert-time snapshot captured 2026-09-30T16:02:51.834Z was used as the primary source text.)
- Footnote one: "Available to all Google AI subscription tiers; currently available to 18+ with U18 coming soon." Backs scene four, second sentence, that a footnote narrows the global rollout to subscription tiers and, for now, to adults.(Google, blog.google, "Let skills in Gemini tackle your most repetitive tasks" by Deven Tokuno, Senior Product Manager, Gemini App, dated September 30 2026; the alert-time snapshot captured 2026-09-30T16:02:51.834Z was used as the primary source text.)
- "we will remove support for Gems starting in November for individuals with personal accounts, March 2027 for Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit customers, and June 2027 for Workspace education customers." Context recorded for the hub page and deliberately not narrated, since the script states no dates.(Google, blog.google, "Let skills in Gemini tackle your most repetitive tasks" by Deven Tokuno, Senior Product Manager, Gemini App, dated September 30 2026; the alert-time snapshot captured 2026-09-30T16:02:51.834Z was used as the primary source text.)
- "bringing this functionality to Google Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit, and education customers in the coming weeks" and "In the coming weeks, skills will have the features you loved in Gems, including the ability to share them with others and add files from Google Drive and notebooks from Gemini Notebook." Context recorded for the hub page and deliberately not narrated.(Google, blog.google, "Let skills in Gemini tackle your most repetitive tasks" by Deven Tokuno, Senior Product Manager, Gemini App, dated September 30 2026; the alert-time snapshot captured 2026-09-30T16:02:51.834Z was used as the primary source text.)
- "For bigger tasks, you can stack multiple skills together at the same time" and "Plus, starting today, you can create skills that include reference files like plain text documents, PDFs, or images." Context recorded for the hub page and deliberately not narrated, to keep the script clear of enumerated lists.(Google, blog.google, "Let skills in Gemini tackle your most repetitive tasks" by Deven Tokuno, Senior Product Manager, Gemini App, dated September 30 2026; the alert-time snapshot captured 2026-09-30T16:02:51.834Z was used as the primary source text.)
