Microsoft Research Introduces Quine For Biology

Microsoft Research has introduced Quine, a research effort to build a multimodal world model of biology plus an interactive harness connecting models, scientific tools, literature and researchers. Microsoft defines the world model as a system that can represent the state of a biological system, predict how that state evolves in response to interventions, and reason over the consequences. It is meant to inform experimental design, not replace experimentation.

Microsoft Research has introduced Quine, an AI system for biology. It is not a product.

Quine is a world model of biology with a harness connecting tools and scientists. Microsoft says it should inform experiments, not replace them.

With the Broad Institute, Quine ranked thousands of compounds for shifting pancreatic tumor cell states. Its top choices produced the largest intended shifts, and ranking took one weekend.

Some strong effects came from compounds with unexpected mechanisms. Quine also predicted a third cell state that the lab confirmed.

Quine is experimental research technology, not for clinical or medical use. Access is limited to the Quine Fellows program and select collaborations.
