OpenAI is backing a California bill on teen AI safety and wants Governor Newsom to sign it.

OpenAI announced support for California Senate Bill eleven nineteen. The company urged Governor Newsom to sign the youth AI safety measure.

The bill would require companies to determine a user's age and run safety reviews before release. It would add independent audits and limits on targeted advertising.

OpenAI says nearly nine in ten teens using ChatGPT do so weekly for learning or productivity. The bill would apply protections automatically for teens thirteen to seventeen.

OpenAI already offers ChatGPT for Teens with parental controls. Users estimated under eighteen are placed there automatically. OpenAI says these protections cannot be turned off.
