OpenAI: Nearly Half of Job-Specific AI Use Crosses Roles
OpenAI Economic Research analyzed more than 800,000 ChatGPT messages from U.S. workers and found that AI use is already crossing job boundaries. 16.8% of work-related messages and 43.5% of occupation-specific messages involve tasks tied to a different occupation, a pattern OpenAI calls task crossover. The effect is largest for customer experience (77%), design (75%), and human resources (69%) workers, and small businesses show more crossover than large ones (18.9% versus 16.3%).

OpenAI studied over 800,000 ChatGPT messages and found workers are quietly taking on jobs outside their own.
The research found 16.8% of work messages, and 43.5% of occupation-specific messages, involve tasks tied to a different job. They call this task crossover.
Some roles borrow the most. Outside tasks made up 77% of customer experience messages, 75% for designers, and 69% for human resources workers.
Small businesses show more crossover. Outside-occupation tasks were 18.9% for workspaces with two to five seats, versus 16.3% for those over one hundred seats.
